Commissioned by Ffern, Luke Evans set out to tell the story of a scent formed in an unexpected way. His vision was to capture both the science and the quiet beauty behind a fragrance created through fermentation.
Inspired by the challenge of bottling the fresh, juicy scent of orchard pears — a fruit too full of water for traditional essential oil extraction — Ffern’s perfumers turned to fermentation. Through patient experimentation and esterification, they created a molecule identical to the one found in real pears.
Luke’s work reflects the joining of science, nature and craft. It marks the moment the pear’s elusive scent was recreated and bottled naturally for the first time, in autumn 25.
