In early Spring 2021, British fragrance brand Jo Malone approached a selection of artists with a brief to create a new piece of work that embodied the theme of Spring. Luke Evans was commissioned to document the work of English chocolatier Paul A Young.

For his interpretation, Paul constructed four chocolate sculptures to represent the inherent textural qualities of the chocolate itself. Effectively then deconstructing the pieces, Luke’s still lives take an archaeological view of the ingredients, with set design by Olivia Bennett.

In addition, Luke was commissioned to document Paul at work crafting the sculptures, and shoot a selection of editorial imagery that positions chocolate as the hero.

Luke’s process mirrored the delicate craft that went in to creating the sculptures, shooting on medium format film with natural light, and hand printing the final images.
