David Stewart is commissioned by the Royal Exchange Theatre for their 50th anniversary season, A Homecoming, to capture the essence of key productions.

Taking inspiration from his shots for the Almeida Theatre’s Greek season, David Stewart captures Lucy Beaumont, Shobna Gulati, Lesley Joseph, and Johnny Vegas for Jim Cartwright’s Road, directed by Selena Cartmell.
Road explores the lives of residents on an unnamed street in a deprived, working-class area of Lancashire during the Thatcher government, a time of high unemployment. The action unfolds over one evening as the residents prepare to go out, visit a club, and return home.
Jill Halfpenny for Noël Coward’s savage comedy Private Lives, directed by Blanche McIntyre.
Private Lives is a 1930 comedy about a divorced couple, Elyot and Amanda, who unknowingly visit the same hotel for their respective honeymoons with new spouses. The play comments on the naive idealism of marriage and its insufficiency for healthy, enduring relationships.
Elaine Cassidy and Katherine Pearce for Rory Mullarkey’s play Even These Things, directed by James Macdonald.
Even These Things spans three centuries, weaving together the histories of Manchester and Ireland. Through three interconnected stories, it explores grief, love and the making and re-making of Manchester.
Alice Audrey O’Hanlon, Jodie McNee and Nigel Harman for the Tony Award-winning musical Fun Home, directed by Sarah Frankcom.
Fun Home follows cartoonist Alison Bechdel as she revisits her childhood, navigating family secrets, first love and the search for her own identity. Adapted from Bechdel’s acclaimed graphic novel, Fun Home is a funny, heartfelt coming-of-age story.
David Threlfall for Matthew Dunster’s new adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
King Lear follows the downfall of an ageing king as power, family, and identity unravel.
