“Many bulbous plants have been dubbed ‘heralds of spring’, but none is more deserving of the title than those carrying actual megaphones to spread the word – daffodils. To know a daffodil is to love a daffodil. ”

Commissioned for issue 7 of ‘Pleasant Place’, Luke Stephenson dives into the world of the Daffodil Society, a group established in 1898 as the specialist society of Great Britain for all who are interested in the genus Narcissus. Visiting a series of the society’s shows across the UK throughout March and April, Luke’s photographic project captures the dedication and expertise that is shown towards the group’s most revered flower.

Fully welcomed into each of the events and award ceremonies, Luke’s lens offers us more than just a visual representation of the society’s proceedings. The resulting project invites the viewer into an active role within this niche and fantastic world, we are taken beyond our armchairs, commutes and screens, and, for a moment, transported into another place. A Pleasant Place to be in…
