Rachel Louise Brown photographs Finn Wolfhard, Caleb McLaughlin, Gaten Matarazzo and Noah Schnapp for the highly anticipated final season of Stranger Things. The imagery launches the UK leg of the Stranger Things 5 press tour across Netflix and Stranger Things digital channels.
A decommissioned underground tube station was chosen for the shoot, something distinctly London while also becoming a charged backdrop that mirrors the show’s atmosphere and the upside down. Shot 166 steps below ground with no lift or reception, the space posed practical challenges, but the psychology of the environment fed directly into the photographs.
Rachel’s approach was informed by her love of shooting at night and in low light with artificial lighting, drawing on visual ideas from her series Simulations. Neon lighting and fluorescent tones were used to shape the imagery, with red neon elements referencing season five developed alongside the team at Netflix and set designer Lyndon Ogbourne.
Rachel also shot behind the scenes Super 8 footage to evoke the spirit of the 1980s, with the cast filming each other on the descent underground. Games of rock, paper, scissors decided the order of individual portraits, with playful moments shaping the final images.
