SAVE THE CHILDREN
In 2015, Felicity was commissioned by Save The Children to travel to Somaliland to document climate change in the breakaway country. Felicity’s photographs sensitively depict the residents of Gargara village, showing the effects of the ongoing drought on both the land and the people.
A lack of rain in Somaliland has led to the loss of almost 40% of the country’s livestock, and Save The Children has built new wells in the area to provide free water to displaced people. Felicity jumped at the chance to apply her aesthetic to a project with the organisation, ‘I had wanted to work with Save the Children for a long time and we had been waiting for an opportunity to make a piece of work together that would benefit from my photographic approach, which often swings focus between human and inanimate subject matter’.
To make use of this dual-pronged approach, Felicity pairs portraits with still life and landscape images, featuring the village residents’ belongings, homes, and shelters. Often using local buildings and materials to add texture, Felicity constructs environmental portraits that are controlled just as precisely as a traditional studio portrait, complete with lighting, backdrop, and props.
