Luke Evans for Wallpaper* Magazine, commissioned by Sophie Gladstone and creative by Olly Mason, shining his own lights to capture this collection of interior lighting pieces. The images were inspired by the look and feel of photograms, focusing on accentuating their design-centric appearances. The inversions of positive and negative helped to recreate this photogram appearance and play with the concept of ‘light’ in a complimentary and, yet, equally opposing way. Luke set out to explore the concept of ‘light’ as a theme in an abstract sense.
Titled “Soft Focus”, the series was mainly shot on film and hand printed by Luke himself. By taking this into the darkroom, the final process itself creatively plays into the theme by removing light, once again. The resulting process and imagery act as a celebration of light in both its literal and abstract sense, an exploration into the dichotomy of the presence and absence, positive and negative.
